Dear Michelle,
As you can see from this picture of me in the EC News, I am
considering giving up my truck for an alternative mode of
transportation. The only problem might be the increasing cost
of horse feed and barn rental. Ah, back to the days of circuit
riding!
My idea of changing transportation modes has prompted
some avenues for slowing down this summer. This week I have
taken some time to explore walking paths, riding trails, peaceful
lakes, and meandering rivers rather than highways and
interstates. As I write this article, we have just completed
Jurisdictional Conference at beautiful Lake Junaluska, NC and Ramona
and I are taking a week of vacation with our children and extended
family.
In this peaceful surrounding of the Appalachian Mountains, we
have received news of the reappointment of our Bishop, Tim Whitaker,
to the Florida Area for another four years. The Conference delegates
elected a new Bishop, Dr. Paul Leeland from the North Carolina
Conference, restructured the administrative and programmatic
framework for Lake Junaluska Assembly, and kept overall budget costs
to a minimum for the Southeastern Jurisdiction over the next
quadrennium.
Another delegate commented that this has been one of the most
spiritual Jurisdictional Conferences he has ever attended. He and I
both sensed the power of the Holy Spirit in our worship, Episcopal
election process, and inspiring reports of Hurricane Recovery in the
Southeast. The affirmation that 'Hope Comes through our Connection'
is one that remains a constant in my mind as I prepare to return
home.
During the coming week, I plan to spend some time on the
road, trails, and paths less traveled... those quiet places
that we seldom seem to have time to wander. In the Gospel of
John, Chapter 14, Jesus reminds us of the gift of his Peace to us:
"My Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you..."
I hope you will find some of those quiet paths and places
this summer to experience 'His Peace' along your summer journey. I
don't know about you, but I've got a quiet, meandering river calling
my name this afternoon. I hope you do as well... See you at the
August 21 Clergy Gathering!

| Flood Buckets Needed by UMCOR |
Due to the massive flooding in the Midwest, the United
Methodist Committee On Relief's (UMCOR) Sager Brown Depot has nearly
depleted its supply of flood buckets. This low inventory is a
serious concern with the hurricane season just beginning.
Congregations and individuals are urged to send completed
buckets, bulk materials or a contribution to purchase supplies. A
list of the contents can be found [ HERE] or you can give $45 towards the purchase of
these items for each bucket.
Gifts can be made to UMCOR Material Resources Advance # 901440
which will enable UMCOR to purchase needed relief supplies. For
additional information, please follow this link: Flood Buckets.

| Used Vans Needed / 15 Passenger Van
Update |
The Bahamas Conference is looking for used Vans for their
Methodist Habitat Mission Project on the Island of Eleuthera as well
as a new Children's Home Project on Current Island slated to begin
in 2009. (The roads are so poor on the Islands and rollover from
high speeds is not an issue, that the insurance restrictions we face
on use of 15 Passenger Vans in the states are not a concern.)
Contact Dr. Gene Zimmerman at
407-423-2776. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Debbie
Turner, a member of First United Methodist of Apopka, is the
director of the American Apopka Resource Center of the Cancer
Society Center. Debbie is in need of a van to transport cancer
patients to doctor's appointments, hospitals, etc. She is
looking for the donation of a van but will consider fund-raising in
response to a reasonable offer. Debbie's number is
407-620-0978 and email is acsapopkaresourcecenter@gmail.com.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As
an incentive for churches that still own and operate 15 passenger
vans to transition to safer transportation, the Conference is
offering a full "rebate" of the 2008 van premium ($4000), if the
church sells the van by June 1, 2008. After June 1
through the end of the year, the Conference will "rebate" 50% of the
van premium, ($2000). |

| "Evil and Suffering" discussion with Dr. Kendall

Why is their evil in a world
created by God? How do we -- and God --respond to suffering
brought about by evil? Dr. Kendall Soulen, Professor of

and a United Methodist minister, will discuss these problems in a
lecture on Tuesday, August 12, 7:00 PM, at Coronado Community United
Methodist Church in the Music-Lecture Suite. We are fortunate to
have this distinguished scholar visit our church and share his
research with
