New Church Development: "Find the pain . . ."
by Pastor Rebecca Hyvonen
Those words from a district clergy meeting last fall continue to echo through my mind:
"Find the pain, and the need in your communities, and then meet those needs." This was the challenge put forth to all of us that day.
At Venetian Bay UMC, as we continue to build and grow as a new church start heading into our third year, we have been praying and looking hard for the pain and need in our community. We've been praying for God's guidance, strength, and wisdom to attempt to meet those needs, and ease that pain, in the name of and through the Spirit of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ, and to His glory. We are grateful to have received the "Partner of the Year," award from the Volusia County School Board, for our service at Creekside Middle School, where we are privileged to worship, but we all feel that there is so much more that we can do!
We've received the opportunity to move our office space into the Venetian Bay Town Center. That will leave the current facility empty, until it is to be removed (as a "temporary building," secondary to the city of N.S.B.'s building dept. plans).
In seeking God's guidance in how best to make use of our soon-to-be-empty additional space for ministry, we became increasingly aware of the gaping necessity for child care in the Venetian Bay, northwest NSB, and southwest Port Orange communities.
We've been meeting, and praying, and researching; and discovered that the most pressing need for single parents and 2-parent working families is after school care for elementary children. That is also the easiest children's ministry to set up, and most cost effective, (and even profitable) as we move forward in serving the community around us.
Deuteronomy 6:7 gives advice to parents to take God's ways and "impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up." As the July 9 "Upper Room" reading said, "Children are a precious heritage and a wonderful gift from God. Every Christian home can be a theological institute, and parents can be the first ones to speak the word of God to their children. We can introduce them to Jesus when they are young."
In this current society, where fewer people seem to know Jesus, and families are more scattered than ever, the church can help to meet, or complement that role of "impressing" on children the basics precepts of the Christian faith, while providing professional, warm and loving Christian care as well. We can ease the pain of empty homes for after-school elementary children; be a life-giving place of parental and Christian instruction; and continue to build and grow relationships as we connect people to God, each other, and the community and world around us.
Oh what a joy to be a servant, child, and friend of our magnificent God, and His life-giving ways! With great joy, gratitude, and humility.

Cluster Contemplates Starting New Church
Aug. 8, 2007 An e-Review Feature By John Michael De Marco**
The Florida Conference’s church cluster concept has been steadily giving birth to new and deeper relationships among congregations. One cluster is taking that dynamic to another level by potentially starting an entirely new church. The proposed congregation would be part of the East Central Florida District and located in or near the new Venetian Bay community west of I-95 near New Smyrna Beach and Port Orange. While Covenant United Methodist Church in Port Orange would supply the primary “DNA” for the new church, the other United Methodist churches in the cluster — DeLeon Springs, Lake Helen, Trinity in Seville, Pierson and First, New Smyrna Beach — would be well represented in the formation and life of the new church.
